Workshops on Scandinavian Fiddling

Some of the most beautiful and oldest folk fiddling in the world, usually played in harmony. These stunning melodies have greatly influenced Celtic music traditions and are a wonderful addition to any repertoire. The women of Fru Skagerrak are only in Toronto for 1 day. They are willing and more than able to do workshops Friday afternoon, April 20, from 2 – 5pm and/or Saturday morning, April 21, 10 – 1pm. They will each give you a bit of an overview of trad music from their respective countries – Denmark, Sweden and Norway – and then each teach a simple tune. We need to hear from as many people as possible immediately about whether or not you’re interested in attending either workshop at these times.

Whether or not we do both (or either) depends on the response we get in the next couple of days. We would probably charge $30 for each 3-hour workshop, all of which will go to the performers. The Friday workshop will be at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Dundas and Parliament area. We’re not sure about the Saturday one yet. So let us know! Please e-mail: anne.lederman@gmail.com OR worldfiddledaytoronto@gmail.com

p.s. Also, we try to post news both here, on Facebook and send out to the Mailing List, Fiddle News, but we have been warned by Mailchimp that we are getting a lot of bounces on the Newsletter. Please check your SPAM boxes to see of Fiddle News is going there. If you no longer want to be on the list, just hit the “Unsubscribe” button at the bottom. If there are too many refused mailings, Mailchimp may decommission the list and we have to start all over. Thanks from the World FIddle Day Team.

I can hardly wait, this will be a rare treat, hearing Scandinavian music from these wonderful young players in TOronto. .Through a repertoire of traditional tunes, new compositions, and songs in their respective languages, Fru Skagerrak- ”Lady Skagerrak” -three master musicians: Maja Kjær Jacobsen – Denmark, Elise Wessel Hildrum – Norway and Anna Lindblad – Sweden,  express their kinship and love of a shared heritage. The result is an explosion of the sounds that exist in Scandinavian music today.

We managed to catch them on the fly as they are touring with a new album, minted only days ago! Come and hear them make our rafters ring!

2nd Get Your Groove on Workshop Tomorrow

Hi All: Thursday, April 5th,  from 7-9 pm, at the L&M Clinic space, 935 Bloor St. West, will be our 2nd “Get Your Groove on” Workshop. We will further explore rhythms for playing back-up, especially for reels and simple 2/4 tunes, and practice hearing  I   IV   V  harmonic changes in different tunes, especially the World Fiddle Day repertoire.  Fun may rear its head.

We will also have a few copies on hand of this year’s REP book and some CDs.  The Dropbox link on the Around-the-World Jam page is not working for a lot of people so please just drop us a message for access to the Jam tunes: worldfiddledaytoronto@gmail.com.

Around the World Jam Tunes now available!

Hi all: We had a great first Workshop on harmony and cool Back-up grooves last week, led by Lea Kirstein, and look forward to the 2nd installment on April 5 (Thursday evening 7 – 9 (Anne Lederman will be on board to lead this one.)

But the big news is I am happy to announce that the Around-the-World-Jam Repertoire for World Fiddle Day 2018 is now ready and waiting in a Dropbox for all who would like it. There is sheet music, and there are mp3 files. Listen, play, enjoy, repeat and please come join us on May 19 at Hugh’s Room. The repertoire is almost all from former years, with just a few new Canadian favourites added in.  We are also delighted to welcome members of the new Tamarack’er Down Celtic Orchestra to help lead the first half of the Jam. The day will look like this:

10:00 am.           – Workshop: Shane Cooke (Canadian Old Time)
11:30 am.           – Workshop: Elizabeth Rodriquez (Cuban traditional music)

1:30 pm – 4 pm  – Around the World Jam wfd-group

To access the Dropbox, click HERE.  If, for any reason at all, this does not work for you, just drop us a quick e-mail at worldfiddledaytoronto@gmail.com and we will sign you up manually.

COST:  THE GOOD NEWS is that we are offerring a discount for the day to all those players who have purchased a ticket for the concert on Friday night, May 18, featuring Shane, Elizabeth and Ethiopian masenqo player Abebe Fikade: AFRICA-CUBA-CANADA (here for more info on the concert).

FOR Players paticipating in the WORKSHOPS and JAM on MAY 19.  $25 (for those with Friday night tickets):  $35 without.
As always, we invite the general public to come and listen  to the Jam absolutely free.

This discount for Friday night ticket holders is to encourage as many people as possible to see this wonderful concert.  We moved it to Friday night, because many playing participants found the day too long last year with Workshops, Jam and Evening Concert, and because we wanted you to see the Artists before the Workshops instead of after.  In the process, you will not only be supporting some wonderful musicians as well as World Fiddle Day Toronto, but also our partners Batuki Music, Polyphonic Ground and the new Hugh’s Room Live non-profit arts association. The charge for the day allows us to pay our awesome Workshop leaders, Shane Cooke and Elizabeth Rodriguez, for their morning workshops, and our House Band musicians in the afternoon (TBA). We will have that ticket window open soon on our site. We sincerely hope you will choose to spend part of your May weekend with us at World FIddle Day Toronto 2018, and we look forward to another wonderful gathering.

World Fiddle Day 2018

HI Folks: Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, we do have plans for some wonderful events in 2018, and as always, we are counting on your support. Firstly, players please join us for our WORKSHOP SERIES; Get Your Groove ON, starting March 18 at Long&McQuade (more info here).

The big news is that we are partnering this year with Batuki Music and Polyphonic Ground (the new Collective of Music Presentors in Toronto which we are proud to be part of) to bring you an unprecedented concert on FRIDAY NIGHT, May 18 at the re-opened not-for-profit Hugh’s Room Live (2261 Dundas St. W.): Africa/Cuba/Canada, featuring Abebe Fikade (Ethiopiann masenqo – one of the wonderful ancient 1-string fiddles from Africa), Okan (Elizabeth Rodriguez and Magdelys Savigne and band, originally from Cuba) and the inimitable Shane Cook from Dorchester, Ontario.

There is no doubt the Friday May 18 concert will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You will enjoy first-hand one of the earliest forms of bowed string instrument, still preserved in East Africa where the masenqo is used to tell stories, pass on history, improvise and entertain. Abebe will be appearing with well-known Ethiopian singer Mimi Zenebe (known as the Edith Piaf of Ethiopia) and percussionnist Bereket Tekabu. From there we move on to Cuba where the violin has played a hugely important role in traditional music, combining the African heritage of the Cuban people with European influences. Okan is led by Elizabeth Rodriguez (violin) and Magdelys Savigne (percussion), both formerly of Jane Bunnet and Maqueque. Finally, we have one of our Ontario masters of Old Time Canadian Fiddling, National Champion in both Canada and the U.S., Shane Cooke, accompanied by the wonderful Kyle Waymouth from Stratford on guitar.

Tickets for this incredible night will be available soon at: hughsroomlive.com (don’t worry, we’ll let you know).

Then, on the day itself, Saturday, May 19, our usual Workshops and Jam will all happen at Hugh’s Room. Join us for Workshops in the morning with Shane and Elizabeth and then our afternoon Jam where we will re-visit some of our old favourite tunes. (Registration available soon). WE WANT YOU, fiddles in hand, for Workshops and Jam. As always, free for those who would like to come and listen.
TUNES WILL BE POSTED SOON.

But we couldn’t wait to help you get excited for the Concert and the big day. We very much look forward to having you join us at Hugh’s Room.
